CFE-DCA-E. Captain William Henderson MALTBY, b. Mar. 14, 1837 (David 6,
Wm.5, Wm.4, Jos.3, Dan.2, Wm.1). "He was a Captain of Texas Artillery
in the Confederate Army during the Rebellion," wrote his sister Lydia
Maltby Barber. He had several children. He died at Corpus Christie,
Texas, Aug. 20, 1880. Here once again we have a family divided
against itself with his elder brother a hero in the army of the Union.
Whether or not the following pertains to him, I do not know.
(War of Rebellion. Official Rec. of the Union and Confederate Armies.
Series I. Vol. IX. p.703)
"William H. Maltby. Camp Esperanza. Mar. 4, 1862.
"If I can get my hands on Lieutenant Maltby I will treat him harshly;
he has stated that he chased two boats' crews 3 miles, this is not
so; here is --- muster roll. . . .I looked at the document, and saw
the names of four men whom I knew, and I learned belonged to Maltby's
party. He said Maltby's statement reflected very much on the action
of his crew in that instance and used hard language, against the un-
soldier like conduct."
Note. Mrs. Edith (Maltby) Dickinson owns the funeral notice of
Capt. William Henderson Maltby, "who died last evening, at 6 1/2
o'clock," the funeral being set for "Today, at 11 o'clock, A.M."
The border is black; at the top is a cemetery scene, stones,
weeping willows, etc. A woman, in hoop skirt and short jacket is
clad with a heavy veil hanging from the rim of her poke bonnet--in
front only--holds a little girl by the hand, while they gaze at an
old-fashioned tombstone."
His nephew, Mr. Jason A. Barber, wrote of his Uncle William
Maltby (brother of Mr. Barber's mother, Lydia E. Maltby) "Later on,
when I was twelve or thirteen, I became acquainted with my Uncle
William Maltby of Corpus Christie, Texas. To my youthful mind he
took the highest place of anybody I ever met and he had the most
charming personality of any person that I ever knew, except, perhaps,
Edwin Booth. I named one of my children after him, William Maltby
Barber."
